The Swiss Family Robinson

The Swiss family Robinson is a delightful read. It contains adventure, self-survival, education and fantasy along with a likable cast of characters.
This story was written quite a while back, so the writing is somewhat old type of English. However I was surprised at the easy enough flow of sentences and the interest that had been sustained throughout this novel.

The story, as the name suggests, is about a family of the Robinson's. The family are ship wrecked onto an uninhabited island in the late eighteen hundreds. The island happens to be full of wonderful resources to prosper, along with the implements from the ship wreck. The story pans out to be a self discovery and educational dialogue of how the family survives on the island.

The father is the main commentator of the story, while his four sons and his wife are the other characters we get to know. I like the style that Johann David Wyss presents the story, in a chronological timeline of events coupled with the wonderment and awe of the families discoveries on the secluded continent.

It should be noted that this story was based on Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. While I enjoyed Defoe's work, I could not help to frown upon the extra difficult and old english text that Robinson Crusoe presents. The Swiss Family Robinson however, is written much more later, so the text is bearable and the content more audience friendly.

I would recommend anyone interested in adventure stories to pick up this famous classic. It truely is a wonderful read, and you will get to feel like you are part of the Robinson's family stranded on the island, trying to make the best of the situation with the resources at hand.
